“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” — Chinese proverb.
As I write this I have been a student of technology for about 40 of my 45 years. It’s labour day 2018 and the last of day’s sun has just disappeared behind me. I’m at a bit of crossroads in my life…
Let’s address the first point tonight. The first computer I remember having in the house was a TRS-80 model I. My dad brought it home from Radio Shack and told my brothers that he “had to sell the darn things and didn’t understand what the heck to do with them.” He wanted my brother’s to figure it out.
I didn’t take to computers until the Model 3 showed up a few years later. I started playing games in BASIC and fell in love with them. Most of the games were text based then but I had strong imagination and could visualize the worlds these text based games created in my head.
I wasn’t long before I was looking at the code that these games were made out of and making simple changes to things like character names and locations. That started me off on my love of computers.
My love of technology as whole comes from my Dad owning those Radio Shack stores and being surrounded by in my early life. The Radio Shack that most remember from the last 20 years or so was a pale imitation of what the stores used to be back in the late ’70s and early ’80s when I was growing up. They literally sold EVERYTHING in Consumer Electronics back then. I had the advantage of having most of it at home.
A true love affair with Tech had started and it has continued since then.
