Is Now the Time to Pickup a PS4?

Ok you’ve got some Christmas money left.  Should you pick up a PS4 now?

Let’s talk.

If you are following the console business at all you are probably aware that this generation of game consoles is near the end of its life.  Both Sony and Microsoft are dropping hints that the next generation of hardware is close at hand.

While neither company has published much “Official” information, two key points seem to be clear at this stage.

The next round of hardware will be quite a leap forward in terms of power and graphical fidelity.

And, the next round of hardware will be backward compatible with software for the current machines.

This is great news for you if you are picking up a console today.  The games you buy today will likely be playable on that new hardware whenever it arrives.

I picked up a PS4 Pro to play the new Spider-man game back in November.  If you have been reading my blog for a while you know this wasn’t an easy thing for me to do!

Should you follow in my footsteps and pickup a PS4 or PS4 Pro?

Honestly? Yes.  For two reasons…

If this is the last hurrah for the PS4 then many great games are likely coming soon that will make it a great purchase.

Days Gone,  Ghosts of Tsushima, Resident Evil 2 — Remaster, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, Metro Exodus, Devil May Cry 5, Bioware’s Anthem and Kingdom Hearts 3 are all coming later this year and promise to be great.  Also The Last of Us part 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 will likely see a release on the PS4 and those look amazing too!

The second reason is the wealth of great games that can be had from the “Bargain Bin” at less than $30.

For starters the 2018 game of the year “God of War” can be had for $30.  Follow that up with Batman: Return to Arkham, Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, The Witcher: Wild Hunt, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Uncharted 4, Bloodbourne, Until Dawn, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, The Last Guardian and Injustice 2.  All of these games are $30 or less right now.

Those are a lot of good reasons to pick up a PS4 right now.  Perhaps one more?  If the predictions are true (I think it’s a safe bet!) and the PS5 is backward compatible with the PS4 then all of these games will be playable on the new hardware so you can continue to enjoy them alongside new releases for the PS5 when it arrives.

  1. If you have the budget, why not! It has amazing exclusive games. Plus, even if Sony releases PS5 this year, it will definitely cost an arm and a leg. Then, there aren’t many titles yet for it whereas PS4 has tons. But then again, it’s all down to whether you have the money or not to buy these things. In my opinion, if you don’t have the PS4 yet, want an amazing gaming experience this 2019 and want to avoid breaking the bank, the PlayStation 4 won’t make such a bad choice.
